Teach Antarctic fieldcraft and rescue — FTO and Senior FTO, 2027/28

Opportunity Overview

Antarctic field training combines instruction, expedition support and hands-on safety leadership. Field Training Officers prepare and deliver practical training across shipboard, station and deep-field settings, mentor expeditioners, maintain field equipment and route information, and help develop station search-and-rescue capability. The work calls for leaders who can translate outdoor expertise into safe group practice in isolated and changeable environments. The linked recruitment covers both Field Training Officer and Senior Field Training Officer appointments. Winter posts carry Senior FTO responsibilities, so applicants seeking winter deployment should apply to the senior stream rather than assume the standard FTO appointment covers it.

Why It Matters

  • This is a direct safety and capability role: good field instruction, risk judgement and rescue coordination help enable station work and scientific field activity in remote conditions. The dual-level recruitment is useful for experienced instructors, but the winter pathway is specifically the senior appointment.
  • Full-time 37.5 hours; non-ongoing temporary. FTO plans and delivers instruction, supports field parties, leads/coordinates SAR, maintains equipment and routes. One FTO at each station in winter adopts SFTO responsibilities; the PDF explicitly directs winter-interest applicants to SFTO. Successful applicants may enter deployment or a merit pool for future seasons.

Who Can Apply

Qualifications

  • Australian citizenship is normally required. Non-citizens are considered only under the employer’s limited conditional exception below. FTO essential criteria in the full PDF: significant outdoor guiding/leading with adults or young people in remote wilderness within the last 5 years plus a relevant Outdoor Education qualification and adult-teaching qualification; OR significant long-serving outdoor-sector guiding/leading experience within the last 10 years, including adult guiding (preferably adult training/instruction). Wilderness First Aid (WFA/PHEC or equivalent/higher); single-pitch climbing instructor and/or multi-pitch climbing guide qualification or equivalent; current unrestricted manual Australian C-class licence. Knowledge/experience includes instructional delivery across most listed areas: trip planning/risk assessment, group leadership, minimal-impact practice, field skills, GPS navigation, radio/satellite communications, snow survival, SAR/first response and coordination, technical rope work, Antarctic-like glacial travel; remote expedition organisation/leadership and teamwork/autonomous work. SFTO essential criteria separately specify Leaders Wilderness First Aid (LWFA/PHEC or equivalent/higher), single-pitch instructor and/or multi-pitch climbing instructor qualification (ACIA, PACI, other recognised authority or equivalent), the same two alternative guiding/education pathways, manual Australian C-class licence, same conditional citizenship rule, passport and aid/CPR currency periods; additionally recent (last 5 years) instruction in the listed field skills, remote-expedition leadership/teamwork, computing/document editing and ICT liaison; Antarctic operations or comparable environment experience is expected. Summer SFTO requires higher technical knowledge and leadership in remote alpine/polar settings; winter SFTO carries added station SAR/on-call, operational planning and leadership duties. APS citizenship rule: non-citizens generally considered only if no suitable Australian applicants, with Australian residents with work rights and NZ citizens next considered. Passport and any visa valid at least 6 months beyond intended stay. HLTAID011 and HLTAID010 valid 18 months beyond AAD commencement; HLTAID009 CPR valid 6 months; can be completed in pre-departure training if not provided. SSAA designation and aviation drug/alcohol requirements apply. Desirable qualifications/experience are not essential.

Important Considerations

  • Applications close Sunday 1 November 2026 at 11:30 PM AEDT (Australia/Sydney). Same closing time shown on the live AAD role page. Roles are for Season 2027/28 per the linked NGA page.
  • Remote isolated deployment, hazardous field conditions and safety-sensitive aviation duties; pre-employment medical, police/referee checks, qualification validation and probation apply. Do not treat desirable items as mandatory or assume FTO criteria alone satisfy SFTO. Citizenship consideration for non-citizens is expressly conditional, not general eligibility. Published deployment totals include allowances and are not guaranteed yearly pay.
