Opportunity Overview

The Australian Antarctic Division is recruiting Deputy Voyage Leaders and Voyage Leaders for the 2027/28 season. Based in Kingston, Tasmania, with Antarctic and sub-Antarctic deployment, these full-time temporary roles lead maritime expeditions aboard RSV Nuyina or other AAD-chartered vessels. The Deputy supports the Voyage Leader, coordinates day-to-day resource tasking across watercraft, aviation, marine science and project support, and acts as Voyage Leader when required. The Voyage Leader leads the expedition as senior AAD vessel representative, delivering science, station sustainment and marine logistics. Both roles are responsible for safety, wellbeing, team cohesion, environmental management and ship-to-shore operations in a remote small-community setting. The maritime program typically operates September to April. Pre-deployment preparation may last 28 working days to three months.

Why It Matters

  • These are senior operational leadership positions at the heart of Australia’s Antarctic science, station-sustainment and marine logistics program. The successful leaders help enable research and essential operations in a remote, environmentally significant region while safeguarding expeditioners and building a cohesive onboard community.
  • Two roles in one advertised listing: DVL (Expeditioner Band 3.1/EL1) supports the VL, coordinates day-to-day resource allocation/tasking and deputises if VL unavailable/incapacitated; VL leads the expedition as senior AAD vessel representative. Full-time 37.5 hours/week, non-ongoing temporary employment; Kingston, Tasmania and Antarctic/sub-Antarctic deployment. Maritime program typically September–April; marine science may occur year-round. Pre-deployment usually begins 28 working days before scheduled departure and may extend to three months. Applicants assessed may be placed in a role for training/deployment or a merit pool for future seasons.

Who Can Apply

Qualifications

  • Australian citizenship is normally required. Non-citizens are considered only under the employer’s limited conditional exception below. Applicants must provide with their application tertiary qualifications in project, logistics, business or supply-chain management, or equivalent qualifications, together with extensive demonstrated industry experience (preferably in remote environments); a current, unrestricted Australian C-class manual driver licence; and evidence of citizenship. Under the Public Service Act 1999, APS employees are required to be Australian citizens. Non-citizens will generally only be considered where there are no suitable Australian applicants, with next considerations being Australian residents with work rights and New Zealand citizens; this is not an unconditional exception. Before commencement, successful candidates must hold a valid passport (and any relevant visa) expiring at least six months after the planned end of their Antarctic/sub-Antarctic stay; HLTAID011 Provide First Aid valid at least 18 months beyond AAD commencement; HLTAID010 basic emergency life support valid at least 18 months beyond commencement; and HLTAID009 CPR valid at least six months beyond commencement. Appointment is subject to SSAA/DAMP/CASR Part 99 requirements, drug and alcohol testing, fitness-for-duty and aviation-policy requirements, National Police Check, referee checks, medical assessment, qualification validation and probation.

Important Considerations

  • Applications close Sunday 1 November 2026 at 11:30 pm AEDT (Australia/Sydney).
  • Remote, isolated 24/7 shipboard community work requires substantial operational and people leadership, resilience, safety/risk judgement, teamwork and active community participation. Appointment/deployment is conditional on medical and other pre-employment checks, qualification validation, required current certificates, passport/visa validity and aviation safety-sensitive drug/alcohol obligations. Allow for pre-deployment training/planning of 28 working days to three months. Salary/allowance amounts are starting figures; voyage remuneration depends on deployment and is not assured as annual earnings. Citizenship consideration for non-citizens is limited as described under eligibility.
