Opportunity Overview
This paid, fixed-term professional attachment offers a Pacific fisheries practitioner the chance to move from national work into regional coastal science. The appointee supports assessments of finfish, invertebrates and their habitats, helps improve monitoring and data systems, and contributes to training national fisheries personnel. The work connects scientific field methods with food security, small-scale livelihoods and sustainable resource management across Pacific Island countries and territories. Unlike an academic scholarship, it is a salaried SPC appointment with defined duties and employment benefits. Its distinguishing limitation is equally important: it is designed for existing Pacific-based professionals whose employers will release them and preserve their substantive positions.
Why It Matters
- Develop operational regional coastal-science experience and return that expertise to a Pacific fisheries or environmental organisation.
- Nouméa-based appointment for 364 days, explicitly non-renewable. Coastal stock/habitat assessments, monitoring/data systems and fisheries-personnel training. Employer release is essential.
