Opportunity Overview

The Royal Society’s Career Development Fellowship supports early-career natural sciences researchers of Black heritage to build a research career in the UK. The four-year fellowship offers up to £703,800, with relocation and visa costs also available. It is intended for researchers who have a PhD, or will complete one before funding begins, and have less than two years of postdoctoral experience. Applicants need a qualifying connection to UK education or research, and the proposed work must take place in the UK. This is research-career support rather than an advertised permanent job; candidates apply through the Society’s grant system and should read the scheme notes before preparing a proposal.

Why It Matters

For a researcher at the start of a postdoctoral career, four years of support gives a longer planning horizon than a short project award. The research remit and Black-heritage eligibility are central to deciding whether this scheme is a realistic fit.
